Pinot Noir Audio Review
We chose this wine to go with
Easter dinner based on some suggestions around the web. Hoping
it would pair well with the spiral cut ham main course and
later with the milk chocolates the Easter Bunny left behind
:)
Woops!
After the initial tasting and
a glass with food we set this one aside for the next day,
uncorking a Sterling Vineyards Pinot Noir to enjoy with
our meal. The Sterling was a very good choice (a review on this
outstanding value later).

The UnConnoisseur Review
Assaulted by a
bouquet of flowers
The wildly aromatic nose/aroma
overpowers on this wine. Strong floral scent. So strong it
seemed when tasting that there may be flower petals marinated
in the bottle.
You could definitely taste the
black cherry flavor. These two flavors dominated. We could not
get past the floral thing enough to drink the wine. My wife
said it was better if you first held your nose while taking a
sip.
The kids smelled the wine one
saying “smells like cherries” the other “smells like a bouquet
of flowers”.
There were a lot of bubbles
that cling to the glass when swirling the wine, also just
a very light amount of sediment. Strange for a 2008 to have
sediment unless it was intentionally filtered to leave some in
but the vintner didn't state that (normally) they
would.
On the second day this wine
was much better and drinkable. Even paired ok with milk
chocolate but with much better offerings at its price point we
just would not recommend this one.
Here is our
review:
- Baron Philippe De
Rothschild Pinot Noir Vintage 2008
- Appellation Pays d'Oc South
France
- Price 9.99 Usually
available locally.
- Alcohol 12.5% by
volume
- This label is from
a négociant (not a winery – see the link for an
explanation)
Clear deep
red color. Strong Black Cherry and Floral scents.
The floral almost overpowered the fruit aromas. Less pronounced
woodsy earthy notes with a hint of leather, pepper and
cocoa.
Medium bodied rich feel
in the mouth fairly smooth medium/light tannin's. Medium
finish.
Structure seemed unbalanced
and confusing a bit wild.
A very light sediment was noticed
along with bubbles clinging to the glass when
swirled. Definitely
uncork this one an hour or two before serving.
We did not particularly care
for it but there have been some good reviews around the web
noted below.
Heard Around The Web
Note - we do not publish reviews that are
nothing more than reworded or rehashed descriptions of the
Vintners Notes that are so prevalent at many "review
(cough gag) sites". We seek out what real people are
saying.
"Pretty
decent for the price of $9."
"VERY surprised how good
it was."
"Classic Pinot Noir
aromas...red cherry, raspberry and earthier - leather,
sweet hay, vanilla and woodsy notes."
"Very pleasant for the
price. It kind of reminded me of a chianti on the nose.
Deep leather and fruit aromas."
